Abstract

This essay focuses on some of life’s phases of Manolios – the main character from the novel Christ Crucified Again by Nikos Kazantzakis, phases regarded through the perspective of his identification with the earthly destiny of our Lord Jesus. These are: 1.The Carving of Jesus’ face in wood – a mask or inner reality exteriorized? 2. Speaking about Jesus to the Licovrisians at the celebration of Saint Elijah. 3 An Exemplary life. 4. The Last confrontation or the last station of his earthly life. Thus, from the carving of Jesus’ face in wood till his sacrificing for the good of the pilgrims finding a refuge on the Mount of Sarachina (at the foot of that hill were the inhospitable Licovrisians), Manolios-Jesus goes through the four phases mentioned above, being attracted like a magnet by the living exemple of his beloved Saviour, on whose footmarks he steps more and more decided, being aware that he fulfils an essential role.
