Abstract
Tudor Arghezi’s departure for Switzerland was necessary because his nature was in contradiction with the Church dogmata and he didn’t want to be a clergyman anymore. His protector, Iosif Gheorghian, head of the Romanian Orthodox Church, advised him to go to the Catholic University in Fribourg, but he would eventually leave this place, moving to Geneva. In this city, Tudor Arghezi began his poetic career and acquired the self-confidence he needed to become the national Romanian poet.
