Lexicology and the Representation of the Divine and the Bestial in Romanian-French Dictionaries

Abstract
In order to verify at the same time the evolution of the lexicographical definitions in the bilingual dictionaries of the 19th century, and the possibility to transpose certain classes of representations evoking Romanian mentalities, we separated in the main dictionaries taken into account the definitional sequences to establish three lexico-semantic series: a series A which refers to the term devil, a series B which indicates the divine, and a series C which includes representations of the Romanian popular mythology.
The bilingual lexicography which begins with J. A. Vaillant for the Romanian-French domain showed a considerable effort towards transposing these representations from a language into another, the difficulties still not being totally resolved in contemporary dictionaries.
Résumé
Pour vérifier à la fois l’évolution des définitions lexicographiques dans les dictionnaires bilingues du XIXe siècle, et les disponibilités de transposer certaines classes de représentations évoquant des mentalités roumaines, nous avons détaché dans les principaux dictionnaires envisagés des séquences définitionnelles afin de constituer trois séries lexico-sémantiques : une série A qui renvoie au terme diable, une série B qui désigne le divin, et une série C qui inclut des représentations issues de la mythologie populaire roumaine.
La lexicographie bilingue qui commence avec J. A. Vaillant pour le domaine roumain-français fait preuve d’un effort considérable quant à la transposition d’une langue à l’autre de ces représentations, les difficultés n’étant pas encore totalement solutionnées dans les dictionnaires contemporains.
Rezumat
Pentru a verifica în acelaşi timp evoluţia definiţiilor lexicografice în dicţionarele bilingve din secolul XIX şi a disponibilităţilor de transpunere a unor clase de reprezentări ce fac trimitere la mentalitate, cu precădere la cea românească, am izolat din principalele dicţionare pe care le-am avut în vedere secvenţe definiţionale pentru a constitui trei serii lexico-semanitce: o serie A ce se referă la termenul diavol, o serie B ce desemnează divinul şi o serie C incluzând reprezentări datorate mitologiei populare româneşti. Lexicografia bilingvă ce începe cu J.A.Vaillant pentru domeniul român-francez înregistrează un efort în direcţia transpunerii dintr-o limbă în alta a oricăreia dintre aceste reprezentări, dificultăţile nefiind complet depăşite nici de dicţionarele contemporane.
