“Grow over one’s head” – Translating an idiom-based wordplay from Swedish into Romanian

Abstract
In this article a selected number of Swedish and Romanian idioms are discussed and
analyzed from different point of views. Starting from one Swedish verbal idiom – växa någon över
huvudet (‘grow over one’s head’) – used in a wordplay in a Swedish authentic text and its
translation in Romanian, the discussion goes on to examine the strategy chosen by the translators
and a potential equivalent in Romanian of the Swedish original idiom. The proposed equivalent is
compared with yet another Swedish idiom. The differences and the similarities of the three
compared idioms – according to structures, semantics, to the character of the semantic roles and
the metaphorical meaning of them – are discussed. Thus the article deals both with translation and
phraseological studies intertwined with contrastive linguistics.
Rezumat
În acest articol sunt discutate şi analizate, din diferite aspecte, unele expresii idiomatice în
suedeză şi română. Pornind de la o singură expresie idiomatică în suedeză – växa någon över
huvudet (‚a-i creşte cuiva peste cap’) – care prezintă un joc de cuvinte într-un text beletristic în
suedeză şi de la traducerea ei în română, lucrarea analizează mai departe strategia folosită de
către traducătorii şi o potenţială echivalentă în română a expresiei suedeze originale. Echivalenta
propusă este comparată cu încă o expresie suedeză. Sunt discutate diferenţa şi asemănarea celor
trei expresii din punct de vedere structural, semantic, al caracterului rolurilor lor semantice şi al
sensului lor metaforic. Aşadar, articolul se încadrează şi în traductologie, frazelogie şi, în parte, în
lingvistică contrastivă.
