Abstract

The article discusses some observations made by Cioran about himself concerning his first books in Romanian, the reasons for his abandoning this language, his recognition as a writer in French, as well as the quasi general discrepancy between what he said and what he did.

The article goes on to highlight the widely fluctuating critical reception of Cioran’s work, both in his native country and in his country of adoption, emphasizing that the path from high praise to reproach was taken in reverse order in each of these countries. Various examples of neutral, adverse and highly laudatory reception – both Romanian and French – are given.
