Abstract
The aim of this paper is to prove that André Gide’s apparent “book about nothing”, ‘Paludes’, represents, in fact, an important step in the evolution of modern literature and its significance lies not in its simple subject and lack of action, but in the original writing technique that the author chooses for his “sotie”, in which the form is more important than the content and the characters. This paper contains instances taken from the book, and the author’s own explanations, as well as various critical references that are meant to support the arguments that we want to underline, namely that this satire presents a narrator in the process of creating a storywithin-a-story, using what is called the “mise en abyme”-technique that Gide will also apply in his only novel, ‘The Counterfeiters’. The ambiguity of ‘Paludes’ is intentional, the readers being invited to discover what is left unsaid and to contribute to the composition of the book.
Rezumat
Scopul acestei lucrări este de a demonstra că aparenta „carte despre nimic” a lui André Gide, „Paludes”, reprezintă, de fapt, un pas important în evoluţia literaturii moderne şi valoarea sa nu este dată de subiectul simplu şi lipsa de acţiune, ci de tehnica originală de scriere, pe care autorul o alege pentru „sotia” sa, în care forma este mai importantă decât conţinutul şi personajele. Lucrarea de faţă cuprinde exemple preluate din carte şi propriile explicaţii ale autorului, precum şi diferite referinţe critice menite să susţină argumentele pe care dorim să le accentuăm, şi anume că această satiră prezintă un narator aflat în procesul creării unei povestiri în ramă, folosind ceea ce se numeşte tehnica „mise en abyme”, pe care Gide o va aplica şi în singurul său roman, „Falsificatorii de bani”. Ambiguitatea din „Paludes” este intenţionată, cititorii fiind invitaţi să descopere ceea ce a rămas nespus şi să contribuie la compoziţia cărţii.
